Setareh Develops Vibration Control Device
February 1, 2017
Prof. Mehdi Setareh, Ph.D., with some help from his undergraduate and graduate students, has invented a portable tuned mass damper (PTMD) to reduce structural vibrations in buildings. The PTMD significantly improves on existing technology by making vibration control more compact, affordable, simple to set up and tune, and easy to integrate into a structure’s design. The prototype device has reduced vibrations by as much as 40 to 75 percent in tests at the Vibration Testing Lab, as well as in other campus buildings.
