A+D alumni Alec Luong, AIA (B.Arch., 2009) and Emily Chisolm Luong (MLA, 2011) wanted to help coordinate efforts to supply neighbors with information and assistance in the wake of catastophic flooding caused by Hurricane Harvey. Their neighborhood, Briarhills, sits at the base of the Barker Dam in West Houston. Rain from Hurricane Harvey and the subsequent release of water from the Barker and Addicks dams has devastated the area, with over 100 homes flooded. As president of the Briarhills Property Owners Association, Alec contacted former classmate Jessica Bowling Goddard (B.Arch., 2008), who established MOOSH Creative, a web development business in Fort Mill, South Carolina. Alec asked Jessica if she could build a website to disseminate information to residents, coordinate requests for assistance, organize volunteers, and encourage donations. She immediately began designing the website and completed it by the end of the Labor Day weekend. Jessica charged no fee for her services. Our alumni continue to demonstrate the spirit of Virginia Tech’s motto, Ut Prosim (That I May Serve).
