Project by A+D Faculty, Alumni, and Students Receives AIA Virginia Design Award
November 9, 2016
A house designed and built by Prof. Joe Wheeler and alumnus Joshua Batman (M.Arch. 2013), assisted by Brandon Lingenfelser, a master’s student in architecture, and Ryan Alkire, a fifth-year undergraduate architecture student, has received an Honorable Mention for Residential Design in the 2016 AIA Virginia Excellence in Architecture Design Awards program. The project also received an Award of Merit from the Blue Ridge Chapter of the AIA in their 2016 Design + Honor Awards program.
Located near Charlottesville, Virginia, the residence, called LakeHAUS, is a 2,200-square-foot home with three bedrooms, two baths, flowing open spaces, abundant natural light, and natural wood walls and floors. It was pre-fabricated, pre-wired, and pre-finished in a warehouse, then delivered in 12 “cartridges” and assembled on site in a fraction of the time and labor required for typical home construction.
LakeHAUS is the first built application of principles explored through the ongoing FutureHAUS research project.
