Madison Cook and her students discuss the ongoing collaborative process of their foundation design laboratory. The laboratory is focused on developing technical and professional skills as it is about building trust and cultivating a community of young designers. Through detail oriented explorations in two and three dimensions, they are working together to better understand form, space, and light. Our constructed environments are material and atmospheric worlds. It is therefore necessary for first year students to develop an intimate, tactile relationship with their work. It’s essential for students to understand how materials physically engage with one another and how those materials ultimately sculpt space.
