May 22, 2025

During a two-day architectural excursion to the Durham-Raleigh area, the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS @ VT) explored prominent buildings of the Triangle area and the offices of Duda Paine and Perkins & Will.
The trip began with a visit to the office of Duda Paine Architects in Durham, where students toured the office and took part in a hard hat tour of the firm's addition to the Sarah P. Duke Gardens Visitor Center. On the following day, the group toured the Durham office of Perkins & Will, followed by a site visit to their recently completed Drakeford Library Complex.
After a short drive to Raleigh, students visited several key cultural and academic landmarks, including:
North Carolina Museum of Art, designed by Thomas Phifer and Partners, known for its luminous galleries and integration with the landscape.
Contemporary Art Museum (CAM Raleigh), by Brooks + Scarpa, a vibrant example of adaptive reuse and contemporary intervention.
Gregg Museum of Art & Design at NC State, a historic preservation and addition by Perkins & Wil.
James B. Hunt Jr. Library by Snøhetta, featuring innovative learning spaces and a robotic shelving system!
