W_Internship 2025
February 5, 2025
From January 6th to 17th, twenty-eight third-year students participated in the W_Internship program, spending two weeks immersed in architecture firms. These firms designed an intense, hands-on experience that packed a wide range of learning opportunities into just 10 days.
Students explored how technology shapes modern architectural practice, from design software and digital fabrication to project management tools. Sustainability was a key focus, as students observed how firms balance innovation, eco-friendly design, and human well-being.
During construction site visits, students saw buildings at various stages of completion, gaining insight into how designs evolve from drawings to fully realized spaces. They observed architects making nuanced decisions in the field, such as finalizing the height of light fixtures or coordinating with a security company to integrate systems essential for the building’s future use. These experiences highlighted how architecture extends beyond construction, ensuring the building meets the needs of its occupants.
In meetings with clients and consultants, students observed how decisions are influenced by diverse perspectives and expertise. They also attended user interviews, where they saw the human side of architecture—how it shapes communities and impacts individual lives.
Behind the scenes, students gained insight into the operational side of the profession, from navigating building codes and landmark preservation reviews to handling confidentiality agreements and legal contracts. They also experienced what it’s like to be onboarded at a large firm, including learning about benefits packages and workplace structures.
Daily "tips-of-the-day" from practitioners added an extra layer of insight, helping students reflect on their experiences and better understand the profession.
This condensed, immersive learning opportunity was made possible by a generous group of firms and practitioners dedicated to supporting the next generation of architects. We’re looking forward to W_Internship '26 and hope to grow our network of participating firms!
