Fifth-Year Architecture Student Emma Bustetter Speaks on Her Internship Experience at Baskervill
September 3, 2024
This past summer, our students participated in various internships. We spoke with Emma Bustetter, a fifth-year architecture student, about her recent experience at Baskervill.
"I love full circle moments. Baskervill has played a significant role in my architectural journey. From participating in the ExploreDesign program hosted at their office in high school to working in their Richmond office this Summer, I've gained so much knowledge from their team.
Over the Summer I worked for the Civic and Cultural Studio and was introduced to the Shockoe Project. The Shockoe Project is an initiative to create a dedicated site commemorating the history of enslaved and free Africans in Shockoe. The goal is to develop ten acres near Richmond’s Main Street Station and near the historic location of Shockoe Bottom African Burial Ground into a place for contemplation and education. When I attended a public engagement session, I was humbled by how many people cared about a project I got to be a small part of. During the Summer, I worked with my team to develop construction documents and renders for the Shockoe Institute office and museum space on the ground floor of Richmond’s Main Street Station. I also helped with the conceptual design for a memorial space on the ten acres.
Additionally, I worked with my team in the Orlando and Richmond Baskervill offices to develop an adaptive reuse design proposal for Hoods Up (an iconic building in the Milk District, Orlando, FL). I learned a lot from my supervisor about restaurant/retail design.
I am super grateful for my internship and the projects I got to be a part of!"
