Art Chantry Exhibition
November 11, 2024
Last week, renowned graphic designer Art Chantry visited Virginia Tech's School of Architecture, sharing his unique insights into the world of design and visual culture.
Known for his bold, DIY approach that redefined punk and alternative aesthetics, Chantry made his mark in the 1980s and 1990s, creating posters, album covers, and flyers for Seattle’s burgeoning punk and grunge music scenes. His work became closely associated with bands like Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, and Mudhoney, as well as independent labels such as Sub Pop Records.Throughout his career, Chantry has also worked for major clients such as The Rocket, Capitol Records, and Rhino Records, and he has received numerous awards for his contributions to graphic design. In 2017, he published Art Chantry Speaks: A Heretic’s History of 20th Century Graphic Design, a book in which he explores the history and cultural impact of graphic design. Chantry's work is now part of the permanent collections at prestigious institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Smithsonian Institution, and the Louvre.
On Wednesday, Chantry conducted a lecture at the Lyric Theater in Blacksburg and had his work exhibited in the Cowgill Lobby.
We are extremely proud to have had the opportunity to host him here in Blacksburg!
