A part of what makes the Virginia Tech School of Architecture distinct is our talented faculty.

Today we wanted to highlight Professor Markus Breitschmid. Outside of teaching, Breitschmid continues to publish articles on architecture and guest lecture at universities around the world.

Recently, Breitschmid was invited to write on Pritzker Prize-laureates Herzog & de Meuron’s newest building in America. Herzog & de Meuron’s work includes the Tate Modern in London, the “Bird’s Nest” Olympic Stadium in Beijing, and the Philharmonic Hall in Hamburg, among 500 other projects built around the globe. Breitschmid has previously published on Herzog & de Meuron’s Perez Art Museum in Miami.

Powerhouse Arts is a not-for-profit manufacturing facility based in Gowanus and Red Hook, Brooklyn, New York, established to create a robust platform for art production and employment in the arts. Consisting of 170,000 square feet of workshop space for fabrication in wood, metal, ceramics, textile and print, the redevelopment project transforms an existing, derelict structure on a contaminated site into a center for artists, fabricators and other workers and ensures that the industrial legacy of the site will extend into the next century.

Additionally, Breitschmid will be giving a lecture, “Non-Referential Architecture” at the Technische Universität München.
