A few weeks ago, students in the Appalachian Futures Lab ventured out to explore the hills and hollers of the region. With sketchbooks in hand, they studied the ways the natural landscape and ecology of Appalachia inform the building culture of place.

The team visited a number of coal-impacted communities, including Princeton, Itmann, Welch, Bramwell, and Bluefield in WV, along with the birthplace of coal in the region – and site of the lab’s community projects last spring –Pocahontas, VA.

And no App Futures trip is complete without a visit to a Tudor’s Biscuit World…this time in Pineville, WV.

High-fives all around.
