This past summer, 18 students were given the opportunity to study in Rome, Italy with Professor Joseph Bedford through the School of Architecture. For a month, the city provided a living classroom in order to understand the history and theory of architecture during Ancient Roman times while also exploring the city’s built environment. Through photography, sketching the surrounding environments, analyzing architectural studies, and discourse with local architects and historians, the students gained a deeper appreciation and understanding for architecture and its involvement in shaping culture, society, and the future. The group also spent a weekend exploring the Venice Biennale and the discoveries made by designers and artists all over the world. Overall, this experience accelerated the passion these students already possessed for architecture, history, theory, and culture.
