VIA design
VIA design is an award-winning architectural, planning, and urban redevelopment firm located in the heart of downtown Norfolk. Established in 1991, VIA is a future focused, design driven firm. We are passionate about design and enhancing our communities through our work and civic engagement, and our staff through close mentoring, skill building, and exploring the best of the region. Our practice is consistently proactive, collaborating with clients, communities, and local organizations to design impactful solutions that address the most challenging problems of today.
VIA is advancing the design profession with projects and clients that allow us to explore, experiment, and establish best practices centered on enhancing communities, addressing floodwater resilience, preservation and reconstruction of coastal habitats, and sustainable climate change mitigation strategies. Our Institute of Living Futures JUST 2.0 Program label, AIA 2030 Commitment Signatory, and historic urban home located at 319 E. Plume Street, Norfolk, VA demonstrate our commitment and speak for themselves.
VIA has also recently been awarded the 2024 T. David Fitz-Gibbon Firm Award from AIA VA.
Who are we seeking:
VIA design is excited to be a participating firm in Virginia Tech's W_Internship Program for the third year in a row! Third-Year Students in the School of Architecture + Design (any discipline: architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, and industrial design) interested in fully-immersing themselves in our day-to-day workflows during the two-week work period are encouraged to apply. These individuals are go-getters who are ready to learn more about professional practice by jumping right in to contribute to the team and learn as much as possible.
What you can expect:
During the two-week period, participants can expect to integrate with our team, brainstorm ideas during inter-office pin-ups, learn from product representatives during Lunch + Learns, contribute to active projects by performing tasks in Adobe Creative Suite and familiarize yourself with the Autodesk Suite, including Revit and Twinmotion, participating in client meetings, going out to site visits for field work measurements or construction progress meetings, creating drawings, models, graphics, and getting exposure to the professional practice. The participants can expect to look to any VIA design staff member for mentorship and knowledge-sharing opportunities during the internship period and beyond. We are excited to host a Portfolio Critique session for W_Interns participating in our program this year. We will have a dedicated time spend reviewing your portfolio and providing feedback on how you can improve the story you're trying to tell.
