Tianming Zhao

Ph.D. Student

Tianming Zhao is a Ph.D. candidate in architectural history and theory at the College of Architecture, Art and Design of Virginia Tech. His current research focuses on the contemporary rediscovery and redefinition of Frank Lloyd Wright’s organic thinking and his affinity for Eastern philosophy and aesthetics, based primarily on his undefined exposure to Chinese culture and repeated interactions with its people. Radically, the impacts of such interactions on the modernization of Chinese architecture sparks a potential for further study. Backgrounded in civil engineering, he also practices his creative thinking in a trajectory as a calligraphic painter and sculptor.

The compromising of Chinese philosophy in the theory of organic architecture, the intercommunication between organic theory and early Chinese modernism, and the potential of renovating the organic theory for sustainable use in the specific cultural context
