Shelley F. Martin

Associate Professor of Architecture

Shelley F. Martin is Associate Professor of Architecture at Virginia Tech where she teaches undergraduate and graduate studio and thesis courses in architecture, a faculty in the Open Laboratory Boston- a collaborative research studio formed by Payette and School of Architecture Center for Design Research located in Payette’s offices in Boston, and has developed seminar courses in tactile material practices, production and theory courses in photography and filmmaking, and courses in material culture for all majors. She is a Presidential Global Scholar faculty with the Virginia Tech Honors Program, the recipient of multiple university, college, and departmental teaching excellence awards and lecture course awards. Her scholarship centers on architectural pedagogy and its relationship to material culture and processes of production, and the photographic and filmic practices of image construction in architecture and drawing; and has been presented in numerous venues including University of Oxford, Manchester School of Architecture, Aarhus School of Architecture, University of Auckland, Istanbul Technical University, Cranbrook Academy of Art, Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture Teachers Conference, and The American Institute of Architects. Her research centers on the spatial mapping of objects and places in film, and material and phenomenal relationships within constructive practices of photography and drawing. She received her BArch and MArch degrees from Virginia Tech, and practiced architecture with Pasanella + Klein Stolzman + Berg, Architects, New York, New York, working on high end residential projects, Seagrams Building Park Avenue, Harry Winston Jewelers, and State University of New York and University of Virginia campus projects.
