Welcome to the Spring 2021 Architecture Program Lecture Series presented by Virginia Tech Graduate Architecture Program. This is a series of public events that is now led by students to reflect their interests and concerns, and they hope to bring a diverse field of knowledge and work to our design community at Virginia Tech and beyond. This semester’s series will be no exception, and we have a fantastic lineup of guest speakers that are, in their own ways, blazing new trails to respond to our society’s circumstances.

This series is titled Crisis: an opportunity to build better spaces. Crisis is a period of tension. It encompasses a series of catastrophic events. In these moments, there is an opportunity for awakening and reflection. Today, we find ourselves in the midst of several kinds of crises, in the areas of public health, environmental destruction, and social justice, to name a few. It is critical to have a chance to analyze, discuss, and design systems in our world that respond to the issues we must confront as designers and citizens.

Lectures will take place on Wednesday evenings 7 - 8 PM (ET) with a 30-minute question and answer session following directly after the lecture. The events will be hosted and moderated by lecture series committee students. All lectures and discussions will be held via Zoom. These events will be recorded and made available at a future date.

A special thank-you to the students who organized the Spring 2021 Architecture Lecture Series, including: Gates Breeden, Connor Brown, Tim Cox, Keith Hack, Aria Hill, Connor Leidner, Matías Montenegro Sandoval, Benjamin Sturkie, Jake Swartz, Emma Sweeten, and Lelan Yung. The series was also made possible by countless faculty and staff who helped the students along the way.
