Scott Poole

Prof. Poole served as Director of the School of Architecture + Design at Virginia Tech from 2004 until 2011. He came to the faculty of architecture at Virginia Tech in 1986 after teaching at the University of Texas and studying in Finland as a Fulbright Scholar. Prof. Poole has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts, and The American-Scandinavian Foundation. In 1992 he was author of The New Finnish Architecture published by Rizzoli International.

Prof. Poole has organized several international, multi-disciplinary symposia including the Permanence and Presence Symposia in 1996 and 1998. With Prof. Pia Sarpaneva, he was Co-Chair of the 2003 ACSA International Conference, Helsinki, Finland. In 2003, he was the moderator of the final discussion at the 9th Alvar Aalto Symposium, Jyväskylä, Finland. Prof. Poole has lectured at Yale University, The University of Virginia, the School of Architecture in Ärhus, Denmark, and has conducted design workshops at the Royal Danish Academy of Art in Copenhagen and the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. In 2000, he was the Gillmor Visiting Lecturer at the University of Calgary.

In 2002, Prof. Poole was the recipient of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies Teaching Excellence Award. Prof. Poole is a registered architect in the state of Virginia and from 2008 - 10 served on the Board of Directors and as Vice President for Professional Excellence for the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects. In 2010 he received the Distinguished Service Award from the AIA Blue Ridge.
