Burchard Metal Shop

The Burchard Metal Shop is only available to School of Architecture and School of Design students. Students from other departments are not allowed to use the Burchard Metal Shop. Come to the Burchard Metal Shop prepared. Glasses, shoes, and drawings.

Safety orientation and online training is required to use the shop.

The Burchard Metal Shop is for working on studio and design projects only.

Safety glasses must be worn at all times in the metal shop. Hearing protection will be advised when using the grinders, belt sanders, and the sand blaster. Hearing protection is provided.

Items such as jewelry, neck ties, scarfs or any other piece of clothing that is long and that dangles. Work gloves must be removed when using any machine in the metalshop and long hair must be pulled back to prevent the risk of it getting caught into a moving part of a machine. Also included are earbuds and head phones.

Closed toed shoes with socks must be worn at all times in the metal shop.

Always clean up! A clean shop is a safe shop. Clean up after yourself as well as others. Failure to clean up will result in suspension of shop availability to you.

Students are responsible for the purchase of all materials that are to be used in their projects. It is required that you speak with a technician about your project before purchasing any material. Good drawings with dimensions are also required.

NO SCRAP METAL! Purchasing material from a junk yard or recycling center is prohibited.

NO GALVANIZED MATERIAL Galvanized steel has been coated in zinc to keep it from corroding. When it is welded or heated TOXIC fume are created that cause irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat.

When using the welders in the welding lab with the exception of the spot welder, long pants are required. Welding helmets, welding coats, and welding gloves are provided.
